    Preparing for MBBS Entrance Examinations in Nepal; TU IOM, KU, PAHS, BPKIHS MBBS Entrance


    MBBS which stands for Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery is a four and half year program which is compulsorily followed by one year rotating internship training. In Nepal, two Universities Tribhuvan University (T.U) and Kathmandu University (K.U) and two autonomous institutions BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) & Patan Academy of Health Sciences (PAHS) offers undergraduate medical education (MBBS program). Tribhuvan University and Kathmandu University offers MBBS program via their constitutent and affiliated Medical Colleges whereas BPKIHS (B.P Koirala Institute of Health Sciences ) and PAHS (Patan Academy of Health Sciences ) are running their in house MBBS program. They have their own entrance examination, curriculum and grading system for MBBS program.

    Presently the students have to appear at competitive tests conducted by different universities, institutions and the Ministry of Education and Sports (MOES) to prove their merits. Different types of syllabi exist for the same entrance  tests at different institutions and students have to focus their effort accordingly. In order to minimize such difficulties a common principle acceptable to all concerned institutions to hold competitive examination with a common  syllabus has been agreed upon under the umbrella of MOES. The test will be conducted for 2  (two) hours on a model of Multiple Choice Question Answer (MCQA) of 100 questions carrying  1  (one) mark each per question. 

    Tribhuvan University, Institute of Medicine (TU IOM) MBBS Entrance Examination

    Tribhuvan University (TU), established in 1959, is the first University to conduct medical courses in Nepal. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) was established in 1972 under Tribhuvan University with the mandate and the responsibility of training all the categories of health manpower needed in the country. T

    Program Duration : 4 and half years plus 1 Year of internship

     Eligibility Criteria:
    > Students who have passed Proficiency level in Medical Science under two and a half years academic program of Tribhuvan University with Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology and English
    OR Proficiency level in general science with Physics, Chemistry, botany, Zoology and English (PCBZE)
    > Should have passed Intermediate level (10+2) OR Higher Secondary Education or equivalent level with PCBZE from University / Boards recognized by TU with 50% aggregate mark
    > Need to complete all the application procedure of entrance examination and subsequently appear in the entrance exam and should compulsory pass the entrance exam conducted by IOM and then students will be selected in merit basis.

    Entrance Examination:
    The entrance exam will be of 100 marks (a single paper). Candidate should obtain the minimum 50% marks in order to pass the exams. Merit list of those who have passed the exams will be published according to marks obtained by candidates. Notice for Examination Centers and Results of Entrance Examination will be published in TU IOM's website.

    Full Mark: 100

    - Zoology: 30
    - Botany: 20
    - Chemistry: 30
    - Physics: 20

    Scholarship Students:
    The Ministry of Education & Sports sponsors various no. of Nepalese students each year. Applications are invited through advertisements in national dailies during May-June every year.

    International Students:
    International students must take and pass the Medical Entrance Examination conducted by TU Institute of Medicine.


    Kathmandu University (KU) MBBS Entrance Examination

    Course Duration: Five and half years

    - Pre-clinical: Two years
    - Clinical: Two and half years
    -  Internship: One year of compulsory Rotating Residential

    Date of Entrance Exam : Bhadra / Ashwin

    Eligibility:
    Completed 10+2 years of education or equivalent with minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and, Biology (PCB).
    OR
    Completed Bachelor of Science Degree, recognized by the University, with one of the following subjects viz. Physics, Chemistry, Biology and at least one other prescribed science subject of study up to the ancillary level and having scored not less than an overall aggregate of 50% marks, provided that such candidate shall have passed the earlier qualifying examination (10+2 or an equivalent examination) with the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
    OR
    Completed requisite course equivalent to I. Sc. (Biological Group) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English, as main subjects after Certificate Level in Health Sciences from Dhulikhel Medical Institute,Kathmandu University and having minimum of 50% marks in aggregate and not less than 50% of marks in each subjects of Physics, Chemistry and, Biology (PCB).

    Entrance Examinaton:

    Entrance Test for MBBS will be conducted as per the curriculum for MBBS Entrance Examination published by the Ministry of Education. Admissions for self financed Nepalese students are admitted through Kathmandu University’s written medical entrance test (KUMET). The Kathmandu University (KU calls for applications in June-July each year. The advertisementsappear in prominent National Dailies.Applicant who have successfully passed KUMET and meet the above mentioned eligibility criteria can take admission in any medical institution under Kathmandu University.

    The full marks for the Entrance Examination will be 100 and the duration of the examination will be of 2 hours.

    Selection Criteria :
    The selection of the candidates is by:
    a) Nepali Citizens -  Entrance Examination and Counseling .
    b) Foreign Citizens - Entrance Examination and Counseling or Candidates passing  recognized Entrance Test of concern year of MBBS/BDS program in their respective country internationally recognized test will be eligible for admission in the respective program of Kathmandu University.
    c) Nomination from Nepal Government - As per Ministry of Education (MOE) directives, any successful candidates, who seek admission under MOE Scholarship in the colleges/institutions under Kathmandu University must sit for KU entrance test. Those candidates will be selected by MOE as per their selection criteria after successful in KU Entrance Test .

    BPKIHS MBBS Entrance Examination
    B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) was established on Jan 18, 1993 and subsequently upgraded as an autonomous Health Sciences University on Oct 28, 1998 with a mandate to work towards developing socially responsible and competent health workforce, providing health care & involving in innovative health research.

    Program Duration : 4 and half years plus 1 Year of internship

    Date of Entrance Exam : Shrawan

    A total of 115 seats in MBBS program is available in different schemes for Nepalese and other nationals.Various as follows:
    a. Heavily Subsidized Tuition Fee Scheme (HSTFS):
    b. Partially Subsidized Tuition Fee Scheme (PSTFS)
    c. International Tuition Fee Scheme

    Eligibility:
    i. Candidates should have passed I.Sc., class XII examination of the 10+2 system, or its equivalent Higher Secondary Council, with Biology, Physics, Chemistry, and English as their major subjects and obtained at least 50% marks in the aggregate in these subjects; and
    ii. are at least 17 years of age by the last date of submission of application are eligible to apply in the MBBS.

    Entrance Exam Pattern
    The Entrance Examination for all schemes comprises of multiple choice questions in Physics, Chemistry, Biology/ Zoology, English, Introduction to Health, Aptitude for Medicine/Dentistry and General Knowledge. The Entrance Examination will be of 3½ hours duration and will have one paper consisting of 200 Multiple Choice Questions. The language of the question paper will be English.

    Patan Academy of Health Sciences(PAHS) MBBS Entrance Examination
    The Patan Academy of health science is a public not for- profit tertiary academic institution dedicated to improving Nepal’s rural health by training health workers for rural Nepal.

    Program Duration : 6 Years
    - Introductory course: 6 months
    - Basic Science course: 2 years
    - Clinical Sciences: 2 and 1/2 years
    - Internship: 6 Months

    Eligibility :
    > The applicant must be a Nepalese Citizen.The applicant must have completed 17 years of age and not exceeded forty (40) years on the last day of submission of application.
    > Must have passed 10 + 2 or equivalent qualifications recognized by Universities/ Board of Nepal with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB) and having passed in each subject securing a minimum of 50% in PCB and also in aggregate
    or
    > Must have completed Proficiency Certificate Level (PCL) in Health Sciences (General Medicine, Medical Lab Technology, Dental Hygiene, Ophthalmic Science and Pharmacy) securing a minimum of 50% in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and also in aggregate with Nepal Health Professional Council, Level 2 (“ Kha”) registration (in the case of applicants who have done PCL in Pharmacy , registration should be with the Nepal Pharmacy Council).

    Student Selection Process
    Selection process employs well validated selection tools such as psychometric testing combined with  carefully  structured  interviews  for  selecting  the  most  appropriate  candidatesrather  than directly testing one‟s knowledge on Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Only those candidates who have scored well and rank high up in their respective category in written test  will be invitedfor interview.

    Written Tests (PQA):
    Personal Quality Assessment(PQA) is an instrument designed to assess a range of personal qualities considered to be important for the study and practice of medicine. It comprises questions, grouped into following four sectionsto measure cognitive skills as well as particular personality/attitudinal traits relevant to practice of Medicine

    Interviews:
    Multiple Mini Interviews(MMI) is a series of short, structured  interviews used  to assess personal traits/qualities of the candidates that requiredirect observation/interaction and are not  possible to assess in the written tests (PQA).There will be five interview stations each lasting for 8 minutes, where each candidate performs the pre-structured tasks and/or responds to the structured queries put forth by the interviewer/observer.Candidates are given two minutes in between stations to read the instructions, relax and reflect before entering the next station.

    All applicants irrespective of the category should qualify in written testand interview.
