As increasing number of new companies, fuelled by unprecedented growth in science and technology, swarm into the market, the world of business has turned into a battle ground where global business giants can rise or fall in matter of years.

Until a few decades ago, it would have been unimaginable to think companies like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple and YouTube driving the world. Or, imagine companies like Nokia phase out of the global business scene.  Needless to say, Business Studies have become all the more important.

Bachelor of Business Studies, a four-year program conducted by Tribhuvan University, Faculty of Management, seeks to produce new generation of business leaders capable of catering to the changing need of the corporate world.

Why do students prefer BBS? Why should they study it?

Bachelor’s of Business Studies (BBS) is one of the highly-demanded courses offered by Tribhuwan University. This course contains an in-depth study of various management disciplines like finance, marketing, accountancy and business management, among others, so as to help students strengthen their professional careers.  BBS course lays a strong foundation in the area of applied business. It is quite helpful in various managerial fields and empowers students to tackle corporate issues. It makes students capable of overcoming challenges of the present corporate world and consumerism.

How are you promoting the course in the market?
BBS doesn’t require aggressive promotion as it carries a reputed legacy among the business and management study courses offered by the major universities in the world. Most of the students are already well aware of its course contents and its the benefits. Considering these facts, we just try to guide the students if they have any confusion.  I rather wonder why some students with good academic backgrounds do not consider BBS programs. They prefer fancy courses that are advertised in the market. BBS has strong theoretical foundation that is a pre-requisite to deal with every business problems.

Prime College, in this regard, is trying to change the paradigm to position BBS as a masterpiece course in business studies among the colleges who have been offering BBS programs. Keeping in mind the challenges of a global and highly competitive market, Prime College offers BBS course with a new dimension.

Along with the regular curriculum of the university, we offer our students with many value-added professional courses like computer proficiency training, job preparation training, project management training, accounting boot camps, stock market trainings, insurance trainings, team building trainings and many hands-on experiences that will help students to fill the gap of knowledge between academics and real professional world. We also arrange guest lecturers to make students acquainted with the real-world business problems relating to the theoretical knowledge.

What type of opportunities are there in the market for BBS graduates?
BBS graduates get a wide range of opportunities in national as well as global market. They can compete in various sectors of the job market. They can pursue a career in banking, insurance, stock market, multi-national companies and even can start their own business and establish them as entrepreneurs. And of course, they can compete for government jobs as well.

Mostly BBS graduate students get better job opportunities as general manager, finance managers, marketing manager, among others. Apart from this they can even pursue a career in teaching and training. After BBS, they can pursue higher studies in Masters of Business Administration (MBA), Masters of Business Studies (MBS), Masters of Business Management (MBM) and Masters of Business Administration in Information Technology (MBA-IT). The opportunities are in fact boundless.

Why do employers prefer BBS graduates?
Most of the employers, both government and private organizations, prioritize BBS graduates because the curriculum is designed in such a way that it trains students to develop a regular reading habit which in return provides them in-depth knowledge about real business world.  It is even seen that BBS graduates have better analytical skills, which are must for complex business world to make better and productive decisions. BBS students become self-dependent and research-oriented. As such, their dedication level is also high. They are empowered with better interpersonal skills which are the foremost needs of the modern business world.

What are some basic requirements to study BBS?

TU offers a BBS course to students from any stream. To enroll in BBS course, students should have complete their 10+2 or equivalent studies with at least D+ grade or a minimum score of second division mark in each subject. Though entrance test is not a mandatory requirement, but students have to fulfill criterion set by the college.

What are the latest elements introduced in the program?

Up until 2072 BS, BBS was 3 years program. However, from 2073 B.S it has been upgraded into a 4-year program. Since then the program has been able to fulfill international requirement of 16 years of education to get enrolled in postgraduate program at any university.
This has introduced several important changes in the disciplines and has filled gaps that were present in previous BBS course. Along with that TU has planned to revise its syllabus once every 5 years and as part of the plan, university has made remarkable changes in course curriculum over the years.  In some subjects question pattern for board exam has also been changed so that the students can perform better and justify their understanding of the course content. As of a part of the change, in final year students have to prepare project report in their respective specialization.

What skills and knowledge are unique to the BBS program?
BBS is a core management course that caters to the need of contemporary business world. Students pursuing BBS course acquire very strong conceptual knowledge in the field of management, finance, accounting, marketing, and other contemporary subjects.  This makes students capable to compete with other faculties and stand out in the competition. In addition to that, BBS students get in-depth knowledge on business research methodologies and this helps them to conduct researches that aim to solve complexity of the modern business world.

What areas should the government, universities and authorities concerned should work on to improve the quality of education?
Well, I am overwhelmed to answer this question. In fact these are the topic we academicians have been discussing for decades. The question you arose has no straight forward answer. Rather all the three parties you have mentioned should think seriously to uplift the quality of education.  However, these three parties have prepared an environment that focuses on making the education sector a viable and profitable business.  In the process, this has resulted in compromising quality of the education.
For instance, our slogan “quality education for all” is limited only in rhetoric. Because only those who can afford can get admission in the courses that they want to pursue, which is against the main essence of the country’s constitution.  We become helpless when our competent graduates queue up to apply for the low-skilled foreign job opportunities. They would contribute greatly to the national economy, if they were provided employments in the domestic market. The major factor behind the poor quality of the education is the politicization of the sector. Key personnel are appointed based on political affiliation, rather than their qualification.

What are the things that students must be clear about before joining this course?

Actually, before joining BBS, every student should know that this course carries equal or even high value than any other management course. Students should be clear about their future goals and the career they want to pursue. In fact this applies not only for the students planning to join BBS but equally applies for every student before joining any course. BBS isn’t inferior to any other management course. It’s the best platform to get in-depth knowledge in the field of management. Students should even take in mind that to excel in BBS they must follow 5 Ds for success: desire, direction, discipline, dedication and devotion.

Learning to ensure sustainable development : BSC in Environmental Management

Syllabus: BSC in Environmental Management

Learning to ensure sustainable development

Loss and degradation of forest, soil erosion, air and water pollution, unmanaged waste are some of the problems brought on by development activities the country is involved in at the present. Consideration and managedment of environment while conducting development works play a crucial role in enabling and sustaining the health of the eco-system. BSc in Environmental Management, developed in 1999 by Pokhara University (PU), is one such course which produces graduates who can work to create development projects that pose the last negative impact on environment.

Not a course of management
According to Ajay B Mathema, Principal of School of Environmental Science and Management (SchEMS), Environmental Management is not a management course. “Rather it is a Science course which combines science, policy, and socioeconomic applications and primarily stresses on finding solutions to practical problems that people face in cohabitation with nature, resource exploitation, and waste production.”

Closely linked to issues regarding sustainable economic growth, ensuring fair and equitable distribution of resources, and conserving natural resources for future generations, BSc in Environmental Management is a four-year semester-based course (eight semesters). It is being offered only at SchEMS, that runs under the affiliation of PU at Mid-Baneshwore.

As per Mathema, the course is divided into four groups—fundamental Knowledge (including subjects like Zoology, Soil and Environmental Engineering), Environmental Management (including subjects such as Environment Impact Assessment, Geoinfromation Management and Remote Sensing, Strategic Environmental Assessment), advanced courses (Climate Change, Land Degradation, and Research (including research methodology and thesis).

Students are evaluated through 40 per cent for internal assessment, and 60 per cent for half-yearly examination that is allocated for theoretical component of a subject.

In case of internal assessment, Kailash Timilsina, academic director at SchEMS informed, attendance, field-visit reports, and performance, practical lab test among others are marked. Meanwhile, in the final semester, students need to undertake a thesis work in any area of environmental management. “The college appoints research supervisor for each student based on the topic of research and students have to submit the synopsis of research topic and attend the viva-voice examination and give a seminar presentation of their thesis,” informed Timilsina.

In addition, the students are taken to different places, especially national parks among others for field research – as per the requirement of the course in each semester. “They assess and analyse the problems and conditions about the resources of the places they visit,” explained Timilsina.

Students who have completed Plus-two level in Science with a minimum C grade in each subject are eligible to apply for the course and are enrolled upon passing the admission tests conducted by the college itself.

MSc in Environmental Management is the next option for higher studies at SchEMS, which started in 2000.

Internship and skills
Though internship is not calculated as a component for assessment, the college has been providing an internship opportunity for its students to link them with job market as well as to make them proactive” as per Mathema.

The college has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with NGOs such as Resources Himalaya Foundation and Friends of Nature Nepal to send its students for internship programmes, while the students are currently being placed as interns at INGOs such ICIMOD, IUCN among others. “The internship lasts for five to six months,” informed Timilsina.

Mathema informed that the Graduates of the course will have sound skills on Environment impact assessment, Geographic Information System (GIS), multi-criteria decision analysis, environmental monitoring, climate change-vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning, environmental modeling among many others.

Dristi Pyakurel, a VIth-smester student at SchEMS joined BSc in Environmental Management having a keen interest in environment. She revealed, “Our country is taking pace in development works and I want to be a part of it taking an initiative to prevent the negative environmental impact which these developmental works are creating.”

For her the course is interactive as “it has allowed me to experience and learn about different environmental aspects – be it about water quality and its assessment, analyzing the Environment Impact Assessment of various big projects such as Sindhuli Highway among others”. In future she wants to be an environmental inspector under government’s project while continuing her education studies.

Despite such an impression of students and a well-framed syllabus, there is lack of resources to implement them practically and the syllabus also needs a timely update as per Mathema. “We have talked to PU in this regard and are working collaboratively to address it,” he informed.

What’s for future?
Mathema pointed out that there are number of opportunities for this course’s graduates. “Majority of governmental wings such as Ministry of Forests and Environment, Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies, Department of Electricity Development, Department of Roads among others along with many I/NGOs have a space for environmental professional as these institutions are guided by principle which states that no development works shall hamper the environment.”

He added, “The government has also signed various international treaties on environment and development, diversity pact, climate pact among many others which guide to make economic development sustainable, which will prevent long term damage to natural resources and vital habitats. With such agreements, the job prospects for the graduates of the course is high, though it has not come under the limelight.”

Learning to manage adventure tourism : Master of Adventure Tourism Studies

Syllabus: Master of Adventure Tourism Studies

Learning to manage adventure tourism
Travelers these days are looking for meaningful experiences and Nepal offers just that. A home to diverse ethnicities, their culture, traditions and festivals, the country also boasts some of the world’s highest mountains (over 8,000m) that are perfect for adventure. There is no doubt that Nepal has a high potential as a tourist destination. To tap that potential, a good management as well as professionalism are needed in the tourism sector, especially in adventure and mountain tourism.

To address that need, Tribhuvan University has introduced Master of Adventure Tourism Studies (MATS) course from this year. MATS is offered at Nepal Mountain Academy – an independent, not-for-profit, mountain research and educational institution that runs under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation.

“The course aims to generate manpower who would run the tourism industry with a special focus on adventure and mountain tourism in more sustainable, interactive and innovative way,” informs Romnath Gyawali, CEO and Campus Chief, Nepal Mountain Academy.

New course
The Academy has been running four-year (eight semesters) Bachelor of Mountaineering Studies (BMS) since 2018. But after realizing that BMS wouldn’t be sufficient enough to address the growing need of manpower in this sector, MATS was introduced.

The Nepal Mountain Academy formed a committee of experts in 2019 to develop a curriculum, where for each subject three to four experts “shared their expertise to make the subject relevant and contextual” as per Gyawali. After briefing the positive sides and relevance of the course in Nepal, TU approved it.

The Academy has begun the new course from the beginning of 2020 after finding six resource persons who are guiding and assessing the first batch of students. “The teachers are the ones who have acquired similar kinds of degree from foreign universities,” informs Gyawali.

Course structure

MATS is a two-year (four semester based) programme that has embedded adventure tourism management skills. It focuses on subjects such as Adventure Tourism Operations and Management, Global Mountains and Mountaineering, Destination Planning, Development and Management, Tourism Entrepreneurship, Mountaineering Management among others, as per Gyawali. While, Tourism Crisis and Disaster Management, Tourism Innovation, Pilgrimage Tourism and more are its elective subjects which students get to select in the third and fourth semesters.

The entire course is focused on practical approach, informs Gyawali. In the first semester the student are taken to adventure destinations of Nepal where they have to conduct research on the potential and management aspect of that very destination.

Similarly, in the third semester they are taken to the mountain ranges below 6,000 m where they are made to study and explore about the climbing techniques, zoology, geography, socio-cultural part, environmental perspective and much more.

All the reports that are made from these educational trips are assessed and evaluated where the “students are made to present, discuss, and share their findings in a seminar format”.

Students are evaluated based on their performances during internal assessment (40 per cent) and half-yearly examination (60 percent). In internal assessment, Gyawali informs attendance, paper presentations, group presentations, field-visit reports, and students’ performance are evaluated.

Scope and skill
“Till date, there aren’t experts in this field in the country who have studied such a course. Thus there is an immense opportunity for the graduates of MATS,” says Gyawali.

Currently, each administrative division of the nation is guided to explore and manage at least one tourist destination at its respective place, as per Gyawali. So, there isn’t enough manpower to manage such work. “Graduates of the course can work in this area too.”

Furthermore, the Nepal Mountain Academy is not creating manpower who would fit into a job, rather “we are creating manpower who would create jobs in the sector and also plan and research in an interactive way to mobilize international and national tourists in a smooth manner”.

That means the graduates of the course will have sound skill on operation and management of adventure tourism, E-tourism, financial management, tourism research, tourism marketing, logistics and supply chain management among many others. In addition, the graduates will also experience the real life adventure and mountaineering tasks.

This is a new course. Thus Gyawali advises students: “You should be willing to learn in an irregular format and should come with the determination to make reforms in this sector.”

Fee structure: Rs 4,00,000 ( for two years)

Eligibility criteria:
The students must pass GMAT test conducted by Faculty of Management (FOM), TU and need to have a Bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 2 or second division marks. They are enrolled upon passing the interview taken by the Nepal Mountain Academy.

Managing Nepal’s Labour market
Aiming to tackle issues of labour market of Nepal, Tribhuvan University (TU) introduced Master of Arts in labour Studies (MLS) from the beginning of the year. The course seeks to produce graduates who are  able to mediate different labour issues—ranging from exploitation of labours to union strikes to social perception of jobs and workers’ dignity – and provide feedback for legal and systemic reforms for labour management.

Interdisciplinary course
MLS is an interdisciplinary course comprising of theoretical, philosophical and practical subjects related to the issue of labour, informed Keshab Prasad Adhikari, Coordinator of MLS, Tribhuvan University (TU).

“The course includes core and burning topics of labour—labour economics, labour sociology, labour demography, labour laws and policies, climate change and labour resilience, labour research and methodology, labour statistics, food nutrition and labour efficiency, labour mapping, planning, monitoring and evaluation of employment among many others,” he said.

MLS is a two-year semester based programme where theoretical and practical knowledge will be assessed – it has been introduced as a discipline under the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, TU.

Elective subjects are offered in third and fourth semesters where the students have to choose two subjects in each semester from a range of subjects such as Social Dialogue and Negotiation, Labour Movements and Social Transformation, Human Resource Project and Strategy and Labour Mapping among others.

In the final semester, the students are required to do a thesis on their desired topic relating to labour sector which “will carry a six-credit value”.

As per Adhikari, the course is efficient enough in “developing a graduates who will enact professionally in the areas of labour management while playing a crucial role in developing a harmonious relationship between the employee and employer”.

The students will acquire skill of conducting research, planning, monitoring and evaluation of working frame of a company, human resource project, labour statistics to labour mapping and geographic information system (GIS), he added.

Integral  internship
Along with gaining theoretical knowledge, students pursuing MLS also have to complete an internship. However, as the classes are yet to begin, Adhikari informed that they haven’t finalized any fixed structure on where and how the internship will be done. Nonetheless, he assured, “The internship would be of around six months and will begin from the end of third semester.”

He further informed that they have initiated an approach to establish a relation with various sectors like governmental agencies, academic research centres, policy research firms, labour trade unions, corporate houses and other organizations for providing internship opportunities for their students.

“Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) is willing to take in 50 to 60 students at a time for internship if they found them proficient enough. We are about to sign MoU with CNI while we are preparing to host a meeting with Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) for the same,” he pointed out the progress on the internship programme.

Scope
There is a need to maintain a balance between employment opportunities and aspirations of the labourers, and the MLS was designed for the same.

Adhikari added that proper management of labour is a complex issue. “This need to be take care of by people who have the knowledge and background to deal with these issues from a learned perspective,” he shared, pointing out the roles MLS-graduates could play for labour management.

The Dean’s Office has also initiated a process to have its students work under ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security. “There is a positive response from the Ministry as well. They are ready to accept our student for the work of evaluating and analyzing the loopholes in the law and policies set by the Ministry. They are seeking students who would assist the Ministry in its day-to-day work,” revealed Adhikari.

Outstanding A-Level appeal

The A-Level programme offered by Cambridge University has become a popular alternative to the Plus-two programme for secondary education in Nepal. Started in Budhanilkantha School about three decades ago, the A-Level programme is now being offered by major institutions in the country and various reasons prod students to choose it over the Plus-two programme.

Taking students away from rote learning
Julen Pradhan, Marketing Manager of UK Qualifications at British Council Nepal, calls the choice of secondary education “part of a healthy system in education and society”. The main attraction of the A-level programme is in the “quality and type of learning”. Course design for A-Level subjects and the international recognition maintained by the programme appear to impart a number of benefits to the students who pursue this system.

Surendra Adhikari, who was A-Level Programme Coordinator at Xavier International College for eight years, explains, “The syllabus are designed in a way that take students away from the rote learning mentality and develop creatively and analytical skills.”

Adhikari describes A-Level education as “updated and contextual as they are updated yearly” and contrasts this with the traditional Plus two programme which maintains the same syllabus for years on end.

A-Level Programme Coordinator at the GEMS Institute of Higher Education (GIHE), Suraj Baral Explains that A-Level syllabus are designed in such a way that students cannot get high scores without thorough understanding of the subject matter.

“Questions are never repeated in the A-Level tests,” said Baral, who has been associated with the A-Level programme for the past 17 years. “They are designed to include analytical questions which cannot be answered without conceptual understanding of the topic.”

The A-Level programme “provides essential preparation for critical thinking at university,” according to Pradhan, who adds, “Its curricula is developed in collaboration with research at leading universities.”

Nineteen-year-old Animesh Basnet, who finished his A-Levels from GIHE last year, recalls himself going through two phases as he adapted to the A-Level system. “In the beginning of the first year, I wasn’t studying a lot and relied on notes given by teachers to prepare for exams as that method had worked during school,” he said. The method paid off poorly as he didn’t score good marks. He began putting in some work and realized “there is a lot of self-study involved, and your point of reference is not the textbook but the syllabus list. A lot of self-research goes into making sure you understand the topics involved.”

Adjusting to studies
A foundation in A-Level education also makes it easier for students to adjust to study in Bachelor’s and Master’s level as well, said Adhikari. “The course develops necessary academic skills, including critical thinking, which becomes essential in the higher levels of education, he said, “while A-Level students are equipped with these skills going into higher study, Plus-Two students often find themselves starting over in the Bachelor’s level environment.”

A-Level students can adapt easily to foreign courses as well, reflects Baral, as it reflects values similar to foreign courses in demanding critical and research skills as well as conceptual understanding through course structure. “As an education system with British background, it also makes English language proficiency tests like IELTS and TOEFL much easier for students,” he said.

The international recognition for A-Level education can also mean that Nepali Students are allowed to skip foundation courses when joining foreign colleges for Bachelor-level education, Baral states. He recalled a visit to Sunway University in Malaysia in 2017, where he found that Nepali students with A-Level background were allowed to immediately start their Bachelor-s degree course, while students with Plus-two background had to pursue a year of undergraduate studies, which is a foundation course before the start of Bachelor’s studies.

Path to professional expertise

Ayushree Nepal, 19, finished her A-Level from GIHE last year with an eclectic choice of subjects, studying Biology with Management subjects like Business Studies and Economics. For Nepal, the flexibility of subject choice was the greatest advantage.

“A-Level education is rigorous and academically broad. I could gain knowledge on broadly differing subjects, and at the same time studying subjects form different fields opened the field for me to get into any of these subjects later in my Bachelor’s level,” she says.

Having made up her mind, she is planning to study International Relations in the US.

Pradhan says that the variety of subjects available in A-Levels “allow students to specialize in and begin a pathway to academic and professional expertise”.

Pradhan also points out the benefits gained by Nepali students from the English-medium programme.

Ashmita Dhakal, 20, also completed her A-Levels from Xavier International four years ago, and currently is studying BBA at KUSOM, while also tutoring A-Level students. She chose A-Level course because of a distance for rote learning, and found a different teaching-learning style in the system.

“There is no alternative to studying if you want good grades. Questions are posted in a roundabout way, designed to test your conceptual understanding of concepts,” she states, she finds herself better able to tackle analytical questions in class these days, and says that it’s an area where her Plus-two peers seem to be generally lacking.

Sachin Dangi, 19, completed his A-Level from Xavier International last year, joining the programme for its “subject content and teaching module. I wanted to stay in Nepal but did not want to compromise on my studies”

Currently studying BBA programme at King’s College, he finds that pursuing A-Levels gave him analytical skills to understand and explain course contents and notices an improved capacity in writing essays, a skill polished from the General Paper A-Level subject.

MBA: Ticket to success in a professional world

"The programme has proven instrumental in linking the students with the professional environment. Among other business management degrees, the educators and students claim that they are more comprehensive and experience-based"
After graduating as an Electronics and communication engineer from Uttarakhand Technical University in Dehradun, Aditya Raj decided to return back to Nepal to pursue his career. With an excellent degree and lots of hopes and aspirations, he was ready to materialise his designs and ideas. But things did not go as he had expected.

As he began his professional journey, he soon realised that his engineering degree was not enough to accommodate his aspirations to be an entrepreneur. As an engineer, he had the technical skills, but he wasn’t particularly proficient to explain his innovation to his clients. This led him to struggle to find a place for himself and his dreams seemed far-fetched to him.

But Aditya wasn’t ready to give up too soon. He decided to enroll in the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) studies at the King’s College in Kathmandu—a decision he credits for everything he has achieved in the recent years.

“I joined MBA because to be an entrepreneur, it was necessary for me to acquire basic management skills and understand the market trends,” says the 27 year old.

Apart from engaging with the potential clients, it was also difficult for Aditya to manage the finance and marketing side of the business. His technical knowledge as an engineer limited his understanding of the market size and the scope of his business growth. At that time, he decided that pursuing MBA is the best option for him.

CEO of his own startup called Digital Nepal;he is handling a young and enthusiastic team of 25 members.  Aditya and his team were the architect or the main developer of the mobile phone application launched by Province 2 for women’s safety. He believes that MBA has helped him manage his time and business to realise his vision of digitising the country’s educational system.

The popularity of MBA studies have been consistently on the rise among professionals.Ideally, management students are expected to pursue this degree, but MBA has nearly similar appeal among students and professionals from other disciplines as well.

For ShilpaKarki, a management student, pursuing an MBA degree was ‘a ticket to the business world.’“I have always aspired to be a big name in the business world and be recognised as a young and self-made woman leader,” shares Shilpa, who got enrolled in the Kathmandu University School of Management (KUSOM) for her MBAin 2016 after cracking the tough entrance examination.

“The MBA prepared me for the challenges ahead. Besides giving me knowledge about the market and management, it had a positive impact on my personality and public speaking skills,” she says.

As she had hoped, as soon as she graduated this year, she had many job offers—all for managerial positions. This November she got placed as an assistant operations manager at Himalayan Front under the Kathmandu Guest House Group. All this, according to her, would not have been possible if she had settled for her bachelor’s degree.

MBA courses have been instrumental in linking the students with the professional environment. Among other business management degrees, the educators and students claim that they are more comprehensive and experience-based.

“MBS and other short courses do not provide as much exposure as MBA does. It prepares you for the corporate world by providing practical exposures,” says MadhuriKarna, a recent MBA graduate from BMS college of Engineering in Bangalore.

After completing her Bachelor’s in Business Administration (BBA) studies from Pokhara University, Madhuri did not waste any time in enrolling for the MBA. “Practical assignments, case studies, management festivals, industrial visitswerealso part of my MBA course. It honed my time management and knowledge management skills,” she says, originally from Nagarain Municipality in Dhanusha district.

Madhuri, who graduated in June 2018, is now currently working as business development manager with EG Infra Private Ltd under the Emerald Group—an umbrella group of 22 other companies.

“This is the beginning of my career. I can see myself at prominent positions in the future because I am well-equipped with the essential knowledge and skills I have received during my MBA,” shares Madhuri.

Studying Music: What notes to heed

Music has always been a subject of entertainment. When students aim to become doctors, engineers and bankers, music remains a hobby with a few making it a career which is often frowned upon. But there is a scope in music which goes beyond a performing artist. .

Option in secondary level.
One can study Music in secondary school level at Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya - the Ministry of Education introduced Music in the Technical Stream Education in 2016. Starting from Class IX, it teaches four core subjects in the general stream - Nepali, English, Mathematics and Science (100 marks each) along with core subjects in Music - Fundamentals of Music, Music of Nepal, Instrument Keyboard, Music Technology, Music Business and Event Management (100 marks each) and gears one up for SEE. .

Sushant Gajurel,17, is one of the first students who appeared for SEE in Music recently. “I was sure I wanted to do music,” Gajurel says of why he joined Class IX in Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya. “So, why waste my two years.” .

“There should be an option to study Music education for those who want to,” Iman Bikram Shah, Principal of Nepal Sangeet Vidhyalaya opines. .

As per him, Music has been an optional subject like Optional Math and Optional English for Class VI to Class X since 2010 which schools can offer if they wish, however, it remains an extracurricular activity. .

Shah says, Music has always been a hobby and never carried academic importance as music is a creative art and can't be measured. .

In such a case Music has been overshadowed as students and their parents are more inclined towards subjects like Science or Engineering or Management. .

But then there are parents like Sushant's. “This is a practical subject,” Sita Gajurel quips adding, “He showed interest in music other than his regular studies. Rather than being bored studying what he doesn't like, he can enjoy and learn music practically - this way his learning will stay with him.”.

She feared taking this step but “Sushant was willing to work hard for it”. .

Moreover, after the SEE certificate, students can pursue higher secondary education in any stream..

Higher studies.
After getting their high school degree, and through audition, students can join Bachelor of Music being offered by Tribhuwan University (TU) or Kathmandu University (KU). .

If you are looking for raaga-based or sastriya sangeet (eastern classical music) knowledge, TU offers four years of annual BMus programme in Lalit Kala Campus and Sirjana College of Fine Arts. .

You can major in Tabala, Vocals and Flute, shares Niranjan Bhandari, flute teacher at Sirjana College of Fine Arts and Lalit Kala Campus Of Fine Arts. “Folk music of different parts of Nepal is also part of the curriculum,” he adds. .

Other subjects include Applied Theory and General Theory, Music Technology, among others. .

In the Master's level, you can major in Sitar, Vocals and Tabala. .

Sirjana College of Fine Arts also offers Music degree in high school level under National Examinations Board offering subjects Tabala, Bansuri, Vocals and Folk music along with English and Nepali “where basic knowledge of music is taught”..

And KU offers Bachelor of Music (BMus) in Ethnomusicology and Master of Music (MMus) in Ethnomusicology as well as PhD. “KU's music programmes are research-based and produces scholars. It also includes performing arts,” informs Rizu Tuladhar, who teaches ensemble aspect of music at KU. .

In its four-year, eight-semester programme, it offers knowledge in Music Theory and Notation, Practical Music, Introduction to Ethnomusicology, Sound Recording and Amplification, Music and Society, South Asian Civilisation, Sociology and Anthropology of Nepal, Advanced Music Theory, World Music, Music of Nepal, Classical Western Music among others. .

Guidance and knowledge.
As you follow your passion for music, you need guidance at some point of time. And in colleges and universities where all such resources are available, Shah feels one will “become better” as you get to focus on just your music for three years - “it makes a difference”..

After you come out of a university and institution of music, Tuladhar says they can equip the students with different aspects of music required for their future - performing to marketing to business to technical aspect. More than that, he says students will become better human beings as “it teachers you to respect others while you work in a team”. .

Tuladhar is of opinion that music education is about exploring what you don't have: “that is how you get originality or else you are making what is already there”. .

While pursuing BMus at Sirjana College of Fine Arts, flautist Ashish Maharjan, who took flute lessons since he was in Class VI informally, “got to learn about the varieties of theoretical knowledge of music, from history to music evolution to music business and know about different music of the world”. .

For him, getting a music degree is a bonus that backs your musical skill. Also, “you may not play after some years but the degree is going to stay with you forever”..

Not only colleges and universities, music institutions like Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) too guide their students. With a sharing and learning approach, “we provide practical and theory knowledge,” points out Isu Shrestha, Creative and IT Director with KJC. “The great point of KJC is that you get to experience all aspects of music here, from performing to recording.” .

Performing and beyond .
Music has scope like any other profession, points out Shah. You can be a performer, teacher or go in its technical field of recording or background score or sound effects or music business - it is not just about the popstars and rockstars that we see around. .

Organology is one stream. After his MMus in Ethnomusicology which includes Organology, this is what Organologist Agrim Lama is doing. Taking it as an applied studies, he is into making the Nepali instrument tunguna. “I felt the importance to do this,” he shares pointing out, “When I was studying, its (tunguna) book and other resources were not available. I also felt the need to preserve my own instrument and document it.” .

And Sushant is looking forward to pursue a career in music arrangement which he says he was into it as a child..
